Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three existing leading universities in Finland - the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki - Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education and research. The university has 20 000 students and a staff of 5 000 including 370 professors.

Department of Design with its 750 students and 70 staff members is the largest department in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and one of the largest departments in Aalto University. The department conducts research, artistic activities and provides education in bachelor, master and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes.

Lecturer in Contemporary Design

The position will be filled preferably as soon as possible or according to agreement for a fixed term of three (3) or five (5) years or permanently on any level of the Aalto University Lecturer Career System.

Job description
The teaching and research field of the lectureship is experimental and groundbreaking. The field encompasses product design and studio production, from mass market products to one-of-a-kind artifacts. Teaching will provide students with tools to carry out esthetically, functionally and culturally ambitious design projects of highest quality, and the skills for successful implementation of ideas and designs. In addition to professional design capabilities, entrepreneurship skills will be emphasized in the teaching.

The lecturer's duties consist mainly of teaching contemporary design in Design major at BA level and Product and Spatial Design programme at MA level, coordinating and leading design projects and participating in the development of education, research and artistic activities at the Department of Design. The lecturer will guide and assess student assignments and thesis works and take part in the student selections when needed.

Requirements
The job requires good knowledge of the industrial design, contemporary design and applied arts fields encompassing material properties, different production methods as well as a strong vision to combine the rich traditions of the field with future innovations. Project coordination and co-operation skills are essential, as the lecturer is expected to operate flexibly and open-mindedly in the ever-evolving multi-disciplinary field of design.
The lecturer is required to have at least a higher university degree, i.e. master level, and suitable artistic-professional competency, practical work experience in contemporary design and good teaching skills. Research and other merits relevant to the field of the lectureship as well as pedagogic training are regarded an advantage. Fluent communication skill in English is essential, Finnish and Swedish language skills are an advantage. Being acquainted with the international field of contemporary design is recommendable.

Salary and working time
Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the chosen person following the salary system of Finnish universities. Teaching personnel belong to the total working hours system, working 1600 hours annually including approximately 10-30 % lecturer´s own artistic work.

·         List of other activities in occupational, artistic and scientific communities (e.g. working in management and /or academic leadership positions)

The Departmental Committee carrying out the recruitment process reserves the right to request the applicants to submit additional material if needed.

Application process
Applicants are evaluated in the following dimensions: artistic-professional and/or research merits, teaching, collaboration skills and activity in art, design and research communities. The main weight is put on artistic-professional work. The Departmental Committee will choose applicants to visit the Department of Design and to give teaching demonstrations during spring 2015. Chosen applicants will be interviewed by the Departmental Committee and assessed by independent external evaluators.
