Verisk Maplecroft is looking for an experienced GIS professional to work on the production of detailed mapping and high-resolution global risk indices. Applicants with project and people management experience will be considered for a leadership role within the team.
The role involves working in a busy production department to ensure the timely delivery of high quality maps, requiring a hands-on approach to the production of visually-compelling mapping from global to street level. You will need to liaise with internal and occasionally external customers to develop and deliver the best possible map specifications to meet their requirements, and to take overall responsibility for the maintenance and enhancement of our global warehouse of spatial data. The Head of GIS co-ordinates the work of the team, and is responsible for the line management of the GIS team members.
Applicants should have a qualification and several years’ experience in GIS. You should also have strong quantitative and analytical modelling skills, a deep understanding of GIS concepts and knowledge of developments in the sector, and advanced IT skills. A good awareness of global issues and knowledge of global geography is highly desirable.
The position will require an ability to manage time and GIS projects effectively and work in a pressurised environment. You should be innovative and creative with strong interpersonal communication skills, and be comfortable working independently as well as in an interdisciplinary multi-cultural team.
Essential skills include:
A sound understanding of spatial data structures and fundamental concepts of GIS
A high level of competence with the ESRI ArcGIS product suite, including ArcGIS desktop 10.x
Spatial database design and management, preferably with ESRI geodatabases
Scripting ability (Python, SQL, VBA)
A sound knowledge of global geography
Excellent attention to detail
Project management experience
Highly desirable skills include:
Working knowledge of open source GIS applications and frameworks (e.g Quantum GIS, PostgreSQL/PostGIS)
Knowledge and experience of geo-statistical methods used in spatial analysis
Good overview of the availability of global GIS datasets
Knowledge of OGC standards such as WMS, WFS
Experience in the development of predictive data models
Experience of managing or supervising GIS professionals
Ability to produce innovative visualisations of spatial data
Experience in the compilation of interactive web mapping
Experience in one or more of the following areas: environment, ecology, climate change, natural hazards, health, geopolitics, global economics, mining or energy
