As a freelancer I am keen to take advantage of any/all opportunities for networking/marketing. I am on LinkedIn (and Twitter and Wordpress...) and keep getting these "Try LinkedIn Gold, free, for 30 days" kind of emails.

Have any other freelancers taken advantage of this?

Having recently innocently downloaded malware into my precious laptop (and had to pay a man-who-can to sort it) I'm anxious to only sign up to things that are a. good and b. don't turn my laptop into a gibbering wreck.

Thoughts?

Subject: Re: Professional social media

Hi Essex

Personally, no, I wouldn't touch it - but I suspect like most things it depends..

I think if you're in a Sales role then maybe it'd be worth investing in, but even then monthly fee could probably be better spent on something else - Facebook ads, saving up to go to a conference, AdWords, etc.

Although I use LinkedIn, and have in the past found it invaluable in making contact with specific people via the "you know X who knows Y who can intro you to Z" functionality, this was for a specific purpose - namely finding people to talk at conference and events we've run. And all that was using the free version. I cringe lots - and I think most people do too - when those salesy emails come from LinkedIn. In fact I think I've filtered them I hate them so much :-)

Personally I find Twitter absolutely invaluable for stuff that could loosely be described as "networking" - certainly if I want to ask a specific question or am looking for help / make a contact then it's generally the most vibrant of the social networks for me. It has also on many an occasion seen me finding someone via their profile, making contact and eventually doing some work with them - which I guess is the eventual aim of any of this activity.

re. malware - AFAIK apart from the mobile apps, LinkedIn doesn't offer any downloads so don't think there's a connection...?

cheers..

Mike

Hi GEM-land

I'm pulling together speakers for some seminars on learning at the Museums and Heritage Show later this year.

One of our topics will be (after requests for advice and info on this last year) museums and galleries linking into initial teacher training and ongoing teacher CPD. Are any of you involved in doing this or do you know of schemes/partnerships where this is working well and is showing a real impact upon the uptake of museum provision and the quality of the experiences for teachers and learners?

Any thoughts or contacts welcome...

Many thanks, Anra

There is some really good clarity around the employment / tax implications of this in a recent email I received from Hiscox (I have insurance with them and they send very useful e-bulletins occasionally, targeted at freelancers - I really recommend it / them) Anyway...

Subject: Re: Freelance project officer    HI All    Val is absolutely right about this. This post is NOT a freelance engagement; it is a short term contract of employment and would be regarded as being such by the Inland Revenue, who would rightly demand that the employee, NOT Contractor, was on PAYE tax, and the the employer pay employers NI contributions on the salary paid.     As an employee the post-holder will also be entitled to sickness and holiday pay, and there are significant penalties payable by employers who try to scam their staff out of their entitlements to these things by setting up  false ‘self employment’ contracts such as this.    YOU CANNOT avoid your obligations as an employer by simply coercing someone into saying that they are self-employed: there are well established criteria by which the relevant authorities judge if a worker is properly an employee or not. This job is undoubtedly a contract of employment, not a contract for services, so the poor sod who get the the job will legally be an employee, not a contractor, whatever you might think to the contrary.    I wonder if anyone has told the Unison branch at Braking and Dagenham Council about this attempted scam, and what they think of it. Come to think about it why have the HR people at Dagenham council not stopped this. Did anyone think to run it past a properly qualified HR person before they ran the advert?    And yes the fee offered for the work required and experience sought is, in London, a joke. Try doubling the day rate…    Don’t touch this with a bargepole    Cheers       Richard Ellam L M Interactive Science Shows and Hands-On Stuff [log in to unmask] www.lminteractive.co.uk    On 3 Feb 2015, at 16:08, Val Bott <[log in to unmask]> wrote:

Martin,    £28k would be correct if the freelancer worked every working day of the year with no holiday or sick pay. In addition being a freelancer you need to run your own office with the associated overheads, pay your own tax, national insurance, public liability and save for a pension.     I take onboard that this is for a full time position but then it should be advertised as such with a short-term contract to give the employee the associated rights to sick pay, holiday pay and security of employment.    Hope the biscuit was nourishing!    Rebecca    From: Martin Bazley <[log in to unmask]>

Subject: Review of Kirklees Museums & Galleries Programme of Events

Kirklees Museums and Galleries are reviewing how their events are organised, delivered and financed and we would be interested learning how other Museums & Galleries run their events programme along with receiving any examples of good practice.

I would be grateful if you could answer the following questions.

(Please reply off-list and I will share collated responses to those interested in receiving them)

1] Do you have a dedicated events team/member of staff - or do various staff members organise events & activities as just one part of their job description?

(What % of their time is taken with running events?)

2] Do you ever commission external organisations or freelancers to organise your events? If YES, is this a regular commission/occurrence or just a one-off for specific or large-scale events etc?

3] How are most of your events & activities financed?

                - Events budget (fully or partially?)

                - Sponsorship/partnership funding

                - Full costs recovered by ticket sales/charges

4] Do you allow other groups to host events at your site(s)? If so, what types of events are these and do you charge a 'rental' fee?

5] Do you always run certain annual events? (ie. Valentine's Day; Mother's Day; Religious or Cultural Festivals etc.) Why?

6] Why/When do you regularly run other events?

                - During school holidays

                - Linked to exhibitions/collections

                - Linked to national initiatives (ie. Olympics, First World War, Specific Anniversaries; Heritage Open Days etc.)

Subject: sleepovers...

Hello GEMMers

Have you run a sleepover in your museum/historic house? If you would care to share any do's and don'ts with me, I'd be v grateful and will circulate in due course. I'm up on DBS checks, regulated activity etc so ok on that bit but keen to know about themes, activities, things to watch out for discovered only through experience....

Thanks everso.

Subject: Looking for some advice

Hello All,

We have an under fives group that meets once a week and is quite popular but we have one parent who has started to regularly attend who has a tendency to talk all the time. This would be great if it was a parent and toddler meet up and have a cup of coffee and a chat group but we do yoga, a story time and crafts session and a sing-a-long and music session where parents and children interact together. She is really disrupting our sessions but we are unsure how to approach her - even our freelancers who run some of the sessions and deal with under fives day in day out haven't come across this (to this extent) in any of their sessions.

We have all tried the stopping what you are saying and waiting for her to stop talking method which doesn't work and carrying on with the session leaving her and the other parent she was talking to without a clue to what we are doing which also didn't work. We have noticed other parents getting annoyed with her and I don't want them to stop attending. We have spoken about talking to her but are struggling to come up with a way of doing so that is appropriate, won't offend her or cause the word of mouth advertising that has made the sessions so popular backfire on us!

Any advice would be very, very welcome.

Thanks

Subject: Examples of public engagement done well!

Hi Gemmers,

I've just started working at the RNLI as their Heritage Engagement Manager and doing a presentation to lots of non-museumy folk next week about heritage and it's importance so I thought it would be a good idea to give some examples!

I was wondering if anyone has any examples of when heritage has been integrated particularly well into a non-heritage environment, or just more generally when it's been used to engage new or existing audiences with particular effect? I'm quite keen on looking into really simple but very effective ideas so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Katie

Hi Jo,

One way, of course, is to have a word with her outside of the group, and

explain that the group runs to a timetable, and you need to make sure this

happens - and that she is sometimes preventing this. She may not be aware

she's doing it. Much is in the approach - make it an-adult-to-adult

conversation, rather than a teacher-to-child conversation. You could invoke

the fact that the group is here for everyone's benefit, and her chatting

means that others can't participate fully.

Another is to get the group together and agree to set some ground rules.

Again, explain that part of it is about ensuring that the time is used to

best effect, and get everyone to agree some basics. One of these will

definitely be about making sure everyone contributes equally, and no-one

over-contributes - particularly if this is going to skew the timings. Make

sure that the group acknowledges you as 'rule guardian', so you have

permission to say to her: "Thanks, X, but as you'll remember, we agreed that

we'd keep to time/not over-contribute, and we need to do . now (or hear from

Y)'. That way, you're invoking her own agreement that you're in charge of

timing. If you want to amplify this, you could even give yourself a bell or

a rattle, or whatever, which means 'time out' - or use one of the classic

primary-school teaching techniques for noisy classrooms (so everyone has to

count to ten, and by 'ten', everyone must be joining in the count).

Barry
