Hi Katie Ann

Good to hear you are doing such interesting work. I am particularly interested in how heritage, and specifically personal heritage, can be discovered and interpreted outside of traditional heritage environments - i.e. museums and heritage sites. As such my work as a consultant takes on a variety of work, from helping community groups to set up museums, to delivering community engagement projects and also to mentor and monitor HLF funded projects both for HLF and for the grantees.

One of the project's I am currently working on is the redevelopment of the town of Bolsover. It was a town that was built in the 1890s and has been severely affected by politics over the following years. Currently the bedroom tax is taking its toll as it means that people can no longer afford to live in the three bedroom houses. Therefore the council has gone to HLF for a significant grant to make alterations to the buildings so they are more appealing to live in - improving the heating, double glazing etc and also converting some houses to two bedrooms so local people can live in them. (don’t think too hard about the politics of this...). But part of their project is to use heritage as the basis of community engagement. Therefore they are developing a programme that will have heritage at the core but will help people to see their community as a good place to live and move to. However... they are only in the development phase at the moment so we do not have concrete examples. But it will be an interesting project as it develops over the next few years. I am the HLF appointed Mentor for this project.

Another project I am working on which may be of interest is as a volunteer for the Friends of Rock Road Library. This is my local library which has been under threat of closure. The Friends have become an active group over the past 5 years, in developing projects and events that engage the local community. Last year we got a grant for £10,000 from HLF to develop an exhitbions and events programme on World War I at the library. We have got 5 local people who have researched the history of the people who lived in our houses, trained 5 more in oral histories and they are now collecting the stories form local residents. The research and stories will be turned into an exhibition which alters and changes each year for the three years of the project. Events will include working with our local schools and colleges. In addition local residents have developed event programmes based on the WWI theme that are using needlework skills. This is all done entirely by volunteers

There are a number of other projects I could talk to you about, but I will let you get back to me if this of interest.

I would be very interested in seeing a compilation of the projects that you hear about.

I hope this is of interest

Best wishes
Claire

Subject: Examples of public engagement done well!

Hi Gemmers,

I've just started working at the RNLI as their Heritage Engagement Manager and doing a presentation to lots of non-museumy folk next week about heritage and it's importance so I thought it would be a good idea to give some examples!

I was wondering if anyone has any examples of when heritage has been integrated particularly well into a non-heritage environment, or just more generally when it's been used to engage new or existing audiences with particular effect? I'm quite keen on looking into really simple but very effective ideas so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Katie
