Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to bring you a full programme of public events this month at the Refugee Law Initiative.
1. SEMINAR: 'Moving Beyond Protection Space: Developing a Law of Asylum in Asia' - Dr Martin Jones (York)
Tuesday 10th February, 1800-1930 | Conference Room, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London, WC1B 5DR
Asia is often referred to as the region that has "rejected" refugee law. As a result, the approach to refugee protection in the region has been to rely upon principles of humanitarianism and to negotiate "protection space" for refugees with the states of the region. An alternative approach is proposed based upon a broadly conceived "law of asylum" - assembled from a variety of sources from international human rights law to local public law. Such an approach locates refugee protection more solidly in legal norms and institutions. The talk will explore the possibilities and limitations of the law of asylum approach with particular reference to recent developments in refugee protection in Hong Kong.
2. WORKSHOP: 'Climate Change, Disasters and Cross-Border Displacement: Novel Legal Responses in Africa and the Americas?' - Tamara Wood (UNSW), David Cantor (RLI) and Hannah Entwisle (Nansen Initiative)
Thursday 19th February, 1700-1900 | Room G21A, Senate House, London, WC1E 7HU
Disasters caused by natural hazards - such as storms, earthquakes, drought, floods and volcanoes - disproportionately impact countries in the global south, a trend only likely to be exacerbated by climate change. The potential for cross-border population displacement as a consequence of these disasters has attracted considerable public attention and led to fierce debate among academics. This workshop examines State responses to cross-border disaster displacement by presenting and discussing contrasting state-of-the-art legal research carried out in the regions of Africa and the Americas by two academics working on behalf of the Nansen Initiative.
Both events are free and open to the public. You can guarantee your place by registering through: http://www.sas.ac.uk/rli.
3. 'Refuge from Inhumanity: War Refugees at the Intersection of IHL and Refugee Law'
Wednesday 25th February, 1730-1900 | Chatham House, 10 St James's Square, London, SW1Y 4LE
An RLI/Chatham House panel discussion and book launch chaired by Ruma Mandel (Chatham House) with presentations from Jean-François Durieux, David Cantor (RLI) and Françoise Hampson (Essex). Admission is by registration only: http://www.chathamhouse.org/event/refuge-inhumanity-war-refugees-intersection-ihl-and-refugee-law.
