Research Statistician
Salary Scale £27,084 - 32,324 per annum
MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge

The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions and undertakes research on statistical methods and their application to the design, analysis and interpretation of biomedical studies, to advance understanding of the cause, natural history and treatment of disease, and to evaluate public health strategies.

As part of its involvement in the 5-year European Prevention of Alzheimer's Dementia (EPAD) Initiative (mainly sponsored by the European Commission and the European pharmaceutical industry (via EFPIA) under the auspices of the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking (IMI JU)), the Unit is seeking to appoint up to two research statisticians in Biostatistics until December 2019 who will contribute to the statistical underpinning of the EPAD Cohort Protocol and the EPAD Trial Master Protocol. The work consists of (i) modelling data on an on-going basis coming from parent cohorts, the EPAD Register, the prospective EPAD Cohort and other data sources such as from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative and the EPAD trial to refine disease models across the EPAD risk spectrum (e.g. trajectory risk modelling of cognitive decline), (ii) contributing to the building of novel interventional adaptive designs and (iii) developing, where appropriate, statistical methodology for these tasks.

By the time they take up the appointments, the successful applicants will have PhDs in a strongly quantitative subject, ideally statistics. Experience in statistical models for the analysis of longitudinal and event history data, exposure to clinical trials, and statistical programming experience in statistical packages (e.g. R) or in programming languages (e.g. C++) would be advantageous. Applications are also welcome from those with more generic statistical experience who are interested in applying their skills to the dementia area or from applicants with an MSc in statistics with a number of years' experience in medical research. The post holders should have good communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to the writing of scientific papers.

Starting salary will be in the range of £27,084 - £32,324 per annum, supported by a flexible pay and reward policy, 30 days annual leave entitlement, and an optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme.

The post holders will be within the programme "Statistics for Stratified Medicine and Analysis of Complex Phenotypes" and will be line managed by its programme leader, Dr Brian Tom, with further managerial input from the programme leader and Director of the Cambridge Hub for Trials Methodology Research, Dr Adrian Mander.

For further details about these posts and the MRC Biostatistics Unit, please visit our web site
