Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness. (http://www.shifoundation.org.uk/)
The Foundation awards funds for a number of activities. The website is periodically updated throughout the year as funds become available for disbursement and those interested in applying for funds are advised to check the website accordingly. The four main funding schemes are as follows.
(A) Post-Graduate International Conference Travel Grants.
The Foundation has an award scheme to support post-graduate students and early career researchers to present or co-present a medical sociology / sociology of health and illness paper at an appropriate international conference outside the UK. We will provide funding for registration, standard accommodation and travel costs up to a maximum of £600. The approval of funds is dependent on the results a review process undertaken by the Trustees.
The next deadline for applications is April 1st, 2015.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered from postgraduate students registered for a Master’s Degree or MPhil/PhD in a UK University, including students who are full-time or part-time and students who are not UK or EU citizens, and early career researchers within 3 years of the award of their PhD.
The conference at which the applicant is presenting his or her paper should be a recognized international conference outside the UK where their paper can make a relevant contribution. Applicants will be asked to clarify the contribution of their paper to medical sociology / sociology of health and illness including the conceptual or theoretical perspective to which it relates.
(B) Research Grant Development Awards.
Research Grant Development Awards provide ‘pump-priming’ funds for the development of high-quality, innovative and multi-disciplinary research grants in medical sociology / sociology of health and illness. They are intended to support groups of individuals in working together to develop a research grant application and to submit it to a major national or international funding body within three months of the end of the award. Grants can be used to cover the costs of a range of activities, up to a maximum of £6,000.
Deadlines for applications: 16th March 2015.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered from groups comprising at least four researchers, based in at least three different institutions, at least two of whom have a track record as active researchers in the sociology of health and illness.
The lead applicant must be based in a UK University or research institution and be an active researcher in the sociology of health and illness. Other applicants may be based outside the UK.
Expected outputs: Successful applicants are expected to produce substantive outputs in the form of a full grant application to a major national or international funding body and, where appropriate, publications in peer reviewed journals. These outputs are expected to be completed within 3 months of the end of the award unless otherwise agreed in advance.
c) Symposium or Workshop Grants.
These awards are intended to support the development of the sociology of health and illness by funding symposia, small conferences or workshops which address important issues in the field. A maximum of £2,500 will be provided for one-day meetings and £3,000 for two-day or longer meetings. The Foundation does not fund seminars or seminar series.
Deadlines for applications: 24 March 2015.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered from meeting organisers based in a UK University for meetings to be held in the UK. At least one of the organisers should have a track record of research and publication in medical sociology / sociology of health and illness. While applications from post-graduate students are welcomed, at least one of the organising team should be an academic employed by the University.
Applicants should be organising a symposium or workshop which addresses important issues for medical sociology / sociology of health and illness. The Trustees are particularly keen to support meetings with promote discussion and debate on inter-disciplinary themes of wide public relevance, and meetings with an international or comparative dimension.
While speakers may be by invitation, attendance should be open to anyone with an interest in the theme of the meeting (up to a specified maximum) and advertised accordingly. The meeting should be held at a time and place which makes it accessible to a regional or national audience. This is particularly important where funding is requested for the costs of international speakers.
Basic support from the applicants’ institution, for example by providing the venue for the meeting and basic administrative services, is expected. Applications which include other sources of funding are also encouraged.
(D) Mildred Blaxter Post-Doctoral Fellowships
This award is named in honour of Professor Mildred Blaxter, a previous editor of the journal Sociology of Health and Illness, in recognition of her contribution to the discipline.
The award will provide support for individuals who have recently completed a PhD in the field of sociology of health and illness to enable them to disseminate findings of their thesis through publications and presentations and/or to develop a new programme of work related to their thesis. Successful applicants will be expected to produce substantive outputs in terms of high quality publications and grant applications, to put themselves in a position to apply for ESRC Future Leaders awards, NIHR Post-Doctoral Fellowships or equivalent awards from the British Academy, Wellcome Trust or other funding bodies.
The award will provide full salary costs for one year (including on-costs but not estate or indirect costs), at spine point 30, plus £2,500 for research and/or conference expenses. London weighting will be payable where appropriate.
The awards are tenable at any UK University which can provide appropriate support for a Post-Doctoral Fellow working in the field of sociology of heath and illness. This may include social science, health care and medical departments.

The Mentor will normally be employed by the University at which the Fellowship is held but in exceptional circumstances may be based elsewhere.
