DER VERLORENE ENGEL / THE LOST ANGEL
The film title refers to Ernst Barlach’s sculpture 'The Hovering Angel', which is part of the exhibition 'Germany – Memories of a Nation' at the British Museum (until 25 January).
Following the removal of Barlach’s sculpture from Güstrow Cathedral by the Nazis in 1937, the film shows the artist on a day of critical self-analysis. His reflective mood is mirrored by the film’s dreamlike style and poetic imagery.
Considered too ‘mystical’, it was banned by GDR officials in 1966 and only released it in a shortened version in 1971.
British Museum curator Clarissa von Spee will talk about Barlach’s famous sculpture as an introduction to the screening.
East Germany 1966-1971, b/w, 60mins. With English subtitles.
Director: Ralf Kirsten. With Fred Düren, Erika Pelikowsky, Erik S. Klein, Walter Lendrich.
