Here's the summary of a recent email discussion.

Apologies for the late collection of responses. A number of very useful suggestions and possible options were made. A common barrier with freeware is that your trust won't let you have freeware as they won't support it. Large output files were also quite problematic, but it was suggested you could get around this problem by using Drop Box or Google Drive, if your trust allows it.

Good starting point is the infokit that JISC has produced: http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/infokit/screencasting

A very useful suggested site was Phil Bradley’s site: http://www.pearltrees.com/philbradley

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/3406578/how-record-your-screen-for-free-in-windows/

There was a mixture of paid and free versions:

Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html) was by far the most popular suggestion with many respondents positing it as their ‘first choice’. Camtasia Software captures the screen and allows you to edit and add notes and labels and render to the net in the correct format. Easy to use, and allows you to edit videos, add visual and sound effects, voiceovers, subtitles, things like that. Costs between £180-300 sounds reasonable.

iMoves is a possible option if you have a Mac or an iPad. It is free (built-in in a Mac PC) and there are many videos on Youtube showing how to use it. Images and videos are captured with an iPad and imported into an iMac then used iMovies for editing etc. Or you can record using screen capture functionality on iMac then edit the video with iMovies.

"Blueberry flashback" (http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBack/Home.aspx) is Intuitive and easy to record what you are doing onscreen and add voice over with a microphone headset, but for doing simple things but to do more intricate stuff I was advised to go for the paid for version. Screencast-o-matic was also suggested and given a favourable mention along with WeVideo, Jing (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) and Screenr (https://www.screenr.com/)

Adobe Captivate was given favourable reviews, but the licence cost would a major drawback
