Dear colleagues,
you are warmly invited to our next event in the IGS "Not the First World War Centenary" Research Seminar Series 2014-15: We are delighted to welcome Dr Stefan Goebel (University of Kent) to the IGS who will give a talk entitled
"From 'Coventration' to Reconciliation: Coventry and Dresden after 1940/45"
Nazi propaganda celebrated the bombing of Coventry in November 1940 as an iconic demonstration of total war that conventional language could not adequately capture: ‘coventrieren’. Yet, in the aftermath of its ‘Coventration’, the Midlands city became a focal point of international sympathy and a global symbol of reconstruction. This talk will explore how Coventrians endeavoured to transform spontaneous manifestations of international solidarity with their ‘coventrated’ city into viable transnational networks of remembrance during the post-war period. Coventry’s most important partner and twin city was an equally iconic site of wartime aerial bombardment and destruction: Dresden. This talk will show how the two cities became mutually dependent sites of memory.
WHEN: Wednesday, 4th February 2015, 5pm
WHERE: Muirhead Tower, room 429 (Edgbaston Campus)
Best wishes,
Josefin
