Dear Colleague (and apologies for cross posting)
If you are supervising a 3rd (or 4th) year doctoral candidate in the social sciences who is engaged in writing up qualitative data, then you might be interested in applying for them to attend the annual Writing Across Boundaries workshop. This is the sixth year that this very well-received and popular doctoral writing workshop has run, and the fourth time that we are accepting nominations from outside the UK, as well as from British universities. The workshop now runs as an advanced training workshop of the ESRC North East Doctoral Training Centre.
This year, the main workshop sessions will be run by Professor Michael Carrithers (Anthropology, Durham), Professor Maggie O'Neill (Sociology, Durham), Professor Bill Herbert (Creative Writing, Newcastle), Professor Peter Phillimore (Anthropology, Newcastle) and Professor Bob Miller (Sociology, Queen's Belfast).
Please forward this message to relevant doctoral candidates and supervisors in your School. Please note, however, that doctoral candidates cannot apply direct but have to be nominated by their supervisor.
This two day workshop will cost £60 to attend (and free to Durham/Newcastle participants). This fee includes all meals and study materials over the two days, and overnight accommodation at Durham Business School on 12 March can be arranged at an extra cost.
Further details, including online nomination forms, are available on the website associated with the project:
https://www.dur.ac.uk/writingacrossboundaries/
There is considerable, ongoing, interest in the Writing on Writing section of the site, where social science luminaries (including for egs Marilyn Strathern, Norman Denzin, Howard Becker, Arthur Frank and Tim Ingold) write short pieces reflecting on their writing practices and preferences. There is also a section where doctoral candidates can submit pieces on writing, called Postgraduates on Writing.
With best wishes
Robin Humphrey (Newcastle University) and Bob Simpson (Durham University)
