italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Cari colleghi, For some research I am doing, I would be very
interested to know if anyone might point me to any documents,
articles, images, etc. which might provide evidence of Freemasonry
(Massoneria) in Italy in the Renaissance. Much has been written about
Italian freemasonry, but most accounts begin in the 1700s. And if you
ask any Mason (as I have done), they will proudly tell you that
Masonry dates back to the Middle Ages, but then, when pressed, cannot
provide any details as to the Renaissance, much less the Italian
Renaissance.
In my research I have encountered several printer's devices from
Venice which clearly show both the "all-seeing eye" and also (perhaps)
the secret Masonic handshake. But aside from that, I haven't been able
to turn up anything else on this subject.
Any help anyone can provide would be very welcome, since this is a
fairly important part of a research project I am currently working on.
Grazie, buon lavoro,
Jim Ward
