If you were present at the sunrise at Rockhenge this morning who would you
likely to meet?
a) druids celebrating the countdown to the winter solstice
b) tree hugging hippies indulging in the power of the rocks
c) the deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg
However surreal it might seem, the answer is c).
In the darkness of the near dawn Nick Clegg appeared on BBC Breakfast TV to
announce that the Government are planning to spend one billion on a tunnel
under the World Heritage site. The project would also improve the A303
running beyond the tunnel to ease the present tfaffic problems.
There is an element of cynicism that this announcement comes ahead of the
General Election, but it is a problem that needs to be addressed. It is the
traffic problem that is foremost, but with sensitivity to the rock environs
given equal consideration.
