Research Statistician
MRC Biostatistics Unit
Cambridge
Fixed Term for two years
The MRC Biostatistics Unit (MRC BSU) is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions, based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. We are seeking a statistician to undertake methodological and applied work related to evidence synthesis and analysis of large linked routine clinical datasets. The post-holder will work with Dr Rebecca Turner at the MRC Biostatistics Unit, and on collaborative projects with Dr Rupert Payne at the University of Cambridge and with the Department of Social Medicine at the University of Bristol.
The successful candidate will contribute to two projects in related areas. In collaboration with the University of Cambridge, the post-holder will be involved with the analysis of large patient-level linked routine clinical datasets, examining amongst other things the long-term outcomes and health utilisation of survivors of critical illness. Methods of adjusting for potential biases arising from linkage errors, missing data and other relevant data issues will be applied and explored. In collaboration with the University of Bristol, the post-holder will contribute to methodological work related to evidence synthesis. Trials included in a meta-analysis vary in quality, and flaws in the trials can lead to biased estimation of the intervention effect. Methods of adjusting for biases in meta-analysis, making use of both data-based evidence on bias and elicited opinion, will be developed and compared.
The ideal candidate will have (1) a PhD in statistics, (2) statistical modelling expertise, (3) research experience of handling large, complex data sets, (4) excellent communication skills, (5) the ability to contribute substantially to writing scientific papers. The post is to commence on 2 January 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the development, application and dissemination of statistical methods. It is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions and includes many internationally renowned statisticians. It provides a privileged environment for statistical research. The candidate will also be able to take advantage of working in the outstanding research environments of the wider Cambridge Institute of Public Health (including internationally renowned units such as the University of Cambridge Department of Public Health and Primary Care and MRC Epidemiology Unit) and NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre.
Informal enquiries can be addressed to Rebecca Turner ([log in to unmask]).
Starting salary will be in the range of £26,545 - £32,003 per annum, supported by a flexible pay and reward policy, 30 days annual leave entitlement, and an optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme.
