Dear All,
I thought you might be interested in a report that BBSRC has just published of a study of the public engagement and science communication activities of BBSRC funded researchers. The work was conducted by a PhD student we hosted this summer, Jenna Todd Jones, who was on a Professional Internship for PhD students (part of BBSRC’s Doctoral Training Partnership programme).
The report is here: http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/society/pe-strategy-and-funding.aspx , at the bottom of the page. It explores how BBSRC funded researchers are approaching public engagement and science communication activities, where their successes are and what obstacles they are facing. It will be very useful for BBSRC but we also thought there are aspects that will be useful for the wider public engagement and science communication community.
A couple of key findings are:
• 95% of PIs had included public engagement and science communication in their Pathways to Impact and 83% of those had already undertaken some public engagement on their grant. 74% of PhD students had also been involved in public engagement and science communication.
• There seems to be a greater appreciation that public engagement and science communication is important (compared to a similar BBSRC survey that was done in 2005) but still a desire for more training, information and guidance
• Only one in three PIs asked for any funding for public engagement and science communication through their Pathways to impact, 60% were unaware that this was possible.
The report will be considered by BBSRC’s Bioscience for Society Strategy Panel so that we can seek their advice on any changes BBSRC can make to more effectively support public engagement and science communication in response to this report.
Do let me know if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Emma
