Ken,
Harsh words. Unnecessary and I suggest incorrect.
I wouldn't have thought you'd need to defend Klaus.
I feel Klaus will eventually understand and agree. You, I'm not so sure.
I suggest you are mistaken because of your knowledge of maths.
Don seems happy enough with what I'm presenting.
You have gone on a bit about the crank issue and personal criticism. Is that kind of personal attack really what you want to do? I suggest it reflects badly on you.
Terry

Dear All,
Without debating the issue of Ashby’s Law, I raise three clear points.
1) Klaus is obviously dealing with these issues from direct knowledge and use where Terry is not. You cannot “prefer” something to be a function. Either it is or it is not. In this discussion, Terry is once again doing what he did in his article — attempting to compare unlike things. For these calculations to work, Klaus states that one needs numbers that you can add, subtract, and compare. Only in this way can you state whether the things measured are the same, or different, and by how much.
2) It is a minor editorial note, but Terry offered Klaus his “complements.” This confuses the words “complement” and “compliment.” The word complement refers to things that combine to enhance or emphasize qualities, and it is related to complementarity, exemplified by the way in which two theories overlap to explain a set of phenomena, though each theory explains only some aspects of the phenomena. A “compliment” is a statement of praise.
3) Terry claims that he has developed six extensions of Ashby’s Law. I’d be curious to know whether anyone who works with Ashby’s Law in published research has made use of Terry’s extensions. The only references I can find to Love’s extensions (or Love and Cooper’s extensions) are Terry’s own work, or articles co-authored by the same two authors.
While I can claim to extend the Feynman diagram technique or claim to extend the fundamentals of quantum physics, this is meaningless until physicists actually use my extensions.
The great thing about an open discussion list is that anyone is free to say anything as it suits them. The worst thing is that anyone is free to debate meaningless assertions with end. Ignorant people are free to debate serious people whether or not they actually work in the fields in which they pretend knowledge.
We’ve been here before, with Terry's claims about neuroscience, cognitive science, cliometrics, and half a dozen other fields in which Terry doesn’t work, doesn’t publish, and does no research that anyone in the field would recognise as complementary. Complementary work in any scientific field involves what Jeremy Bernstein describes as correspondence. Correspondence is one of the two factors distinguishing crank science from the real thing.
