A 2 years postdoctoral position is open in the framework of a project funded by the Aix-Marseille University Foundation A*MIDEX (http://amidex.univ-amu.fr/en/amidex-supports-4-research-projects-in-the-field-of-fusion). The successful candidate will participate in the experimental part of an extensive theory-experiment collaboration aiming to understand the physical and chemical mechanisms behind the Laser Induced Desorption technique (LID), which could be used to assess in-situ and non-destructively the tritium content of the walls of a fusion reactor such as the international tokamak ITER.
The post-doctorate will be involved in the development and implementation of a CW laser heating system in Ultra high Vacuum (UHV) environment, the related laser heating modeling (Finite Elements Methods), and the realization of LID experiments on model materials relevant for fusion reactors. These materials will be poly- and single crystals of tungsten with well controlled surface state (LEED, XPS). Assessment of LID scenario efficiency for fusion fuel release will be based on mass spectrometry techniques and deuterium will be used as a surrogate for radioactive tritium. Interpretation of the results will be performed in close collaboration with theoretical groups (Density Functional Theory, Kinetic Monte Carlo, Macroscopic Rate Equations) involved in the project.
The appointed candidate must hold a PhD in Physics or Chemical Physics. A highly motivated and experimentally skilled individual is sought-after, prior experience with high power lasers, infrared thermometry, COMSOL modeling, ultra high vacuum experiments, surface science and/or mass spectrometry (TPD, TOF) being a plus. Application is to be sent to both Dr. Régis BISSON ([log in to unmask]) and Dr. Laurent GALLAIS ([log in to unmask]) with indication of possible starting date and contact information of two recommending scientists. The position is based in Marseille (Provence area, France) at both the PIIM laboratory and the Fresnel Institute (same campus). Several weeks per year will be spent at the CEMHTI laboratory (Orléans, France). Candidates must work outside of France at the time of application and their last diploma must not have been delivered by Aix-Marseille Université.
