There’s a paper by Martin du Plessis on the internet at <http://www.qrc.org.au/conference/_dbase_upl/1996_spk018_du%20Plessis.pdf> in which he lists the 10 worst coal mine explosions in South Africa, with deaths ranging from 34 to 125. None of them seems to be a close match for your colliery’s year or death toll, but the closest is Burnside Colliery in 1930 with 38 dead.

I only have a vague reference from another source, which frustratingly doesn't mention the specific mine or the exact year. From the details in that source, I don't think this was explosion at Durban Navigation Colliery in 1926, as that had a considerably higher death toll.
