medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Would anyone here be able to advise the extent of Hebrew biblical scholarship in the eleventh- and twelfth-century Christian West? It is my understanding that knowledge of Hebrew was poor in the middle ages, and that Christian thinkers relied heavily on the Church Fathers for explication of the Hebrew language. But would they also have ready access to medieval Hebrew language tutors, and to contemporary Jewish exegesis of the Hebrew Scriptures, and if so, would this have been considered acceptable as a means of elucidating the Christian gospel message?
Thank you in anticipation.
