I remember a year or two back, the Guardian used a similar system to tell the story of an Australian wildfire: http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/may/26/firestorm-bushfire-dunalley-holmes-family <http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/may/26/firestorm-bushfire-dunalley-holmes-family> - and with that too, I went from being not-enormously-interested-in-Australian-weather to completely drawn in by how well it was told: I then expected there to be an explosion of this sort of narrative, but I haven't seen it - don't know if I'm looking in the wrong places, or if (as you imply) it's a long, hard job getting something like this to work really well, so not one to attempt to knock off every other month, even if you're a huge news organisation.
Pre-dating (and I’m sure inspiring) the Guardian example was the NYTs ‘Snow Fall’ from 2012 http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/ <http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/>
Such work has been both praised (http://www.pulitzer.org/citation/2013-Feature-Writing <http://www.pulitzer.org/citation/2013-Feature-Writing>) and criticised (http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/technology/2013/08/snow_fall_the_jockey_the_scourge_of_the_new_york_times_bell_and_whistle.html), and the NYT has continued to develop how it creates and presents such ‘immersive’ pieces (http://www.fastcompany.com/3020689/most-creative-people/the-new-york-times-fights-snow-fall-fatigue-with-more-snow-falls-and-it <http://www.fastcompany.com/3020689/most-creative-people/the-new-york-times-fights-snow-fall-fatigue-with-more-snow-falls-and-it>)
I think there is plenty to learn from news organisations in this area - good and bad.
