You still don't understand. There are many more powerful tests for
small samples than those you advance. Try reading the A-Z of Error-Free
Research. If you have questions about the significance of the power of
tests, feel free to ask. Also see (and read) Common Errors in Statistics
(and How to Avoid Them).

Phillip,
I do think your criticism - especially as it was written in
such strong terms, and particularly as you circulated it to
the whole allstat mailing list - was distinctly unfair. I'll
acknowledge that it was a bit unwise for the organisers to
describe the course as "intermediate" rather than "elementary",
but it was clearly aimed (as the reference to places on
the course for Humanities people showed) at those with little
knowledge of our subject. It's not unreasonable to aim to enable
attendees to read and understand research papers (in their
own subjects) which contain statistical arguments, and
thereby to "critically assess the validity" of results in
papers.
