We are inviting academic editorial contributors to The CQ Press Encyclopedia of Democracy and Democratization, a new 6-volume reference to be published in 2016. In 1995, CQ Press published Seymour Martin Lipset’s Encyclopedia of Democracy, which became an instant classic. In the two decades since its publication, much has happened throughout the world including many more democratization cases and experiments emerging in Africa, Central and South Asia, and during the recent civil protests and regime changes in the Middle East. Moreover, the then-nascent democracies explored in Lipset’s volumes have undergone 15 to 20 years of change and development with some burgeoning democracies proving successful and some not. The CQ Press Encyclopedia of Democracy and Democratization includes approximately 850 articles organized A-Z across the volumes in the following categories:

Cultural Sociology of Democracy (free press, free arts, voting rights)
Democracy and Development (economics, social democracy)
Democratization
Governing
Historical Groups and Issues
International Relations and War
National Profiles of Democracy by Country (status of democracy today, history of democratic development)
Nationalism and the Nation-State
Philosophies and Theories
Political Participation
Religions and Religious Movements
Rights and Freedoms
Social Issues
Types of Democracy
Underlying Aspects of Democracy

Each 1,000 to 5,000-word article will include the name and affiliation of the contributor in the byline of the entry. The General Editor, who will be reviewing each submission to the project, is Dr. Marc Morjé Howard, Georgetown University.

We are currently making assignments with a deadline for submissions of December 15, 2014.

If you are interested in contributing to this cutting-edge reference, it can be a notable publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing credits. CQ Press, a division of SAGE Publications, offers an honorarium ranging from SAGE book credits for smaller articles up to a free set of the printed product for contributions totaling 10,000 words or more.

The list of available articles is already prepared, and as a next step we will e-mail you the Article List (Excel file) from which you can select topics that best fit your expertise and interests. Additionally, Style and Submission Guidelines will be provided that detail article specifications.

Please contact me if you would like to contribute to building a truly outstanding reference with The CQ Press Encyclopedia of Democracy and Democratization. Please also provide your CV or a brief summary of your academic/publishing credentials in related disciplines.

Thanks very much.
