As I understand it we can offer and encourage people to take up Hep B but we can't force. Some people will be non responders anyway so if they are.. they are.... you can't make their bodies respond to a vaccine.
But our role is to try and educate and encourage.
After the 3rd Hep B the blood level is optimum for uptake at 8 weeks hence the timing for taking blood. Not sure why it is taken 1 week post course except as a needlestick injury....

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Student paramedic placements and Hep B
Hi Donna,
It seems a strange policy to me because there must be fully trained paramedics out there that are non-responders to the Hep B vaccine. Does the training provider have a practice placement coordinator that you can speak to?

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Student paramedic placements and Hep B
hi my NHS OH colleagues
Can someone help me please?
When I last worked in the NHS for an ambulance service in OH, the policy allowed student paramedics to go on placements before their Hep B status was confirmed, providing all appropriate control measures were in place and they were not knowingly exposed to Hep B etc. I understand now that this may not be the case. Can someone help me to understand where and why this change of policy has come about? is this likely to be local policy as I cant see anything specific in the green book.
Why would a student paramedic be allowed to go on placement whilst waiting for BCG but not be allowed to go on placement when Hep B titre levels are low following accelerated course? would a titre level likely to be >10 iu/L anyway one week after completing an accelerated course?
Sorry for all the questions!
thanks
Donna
