Hi everyone,
You might remember a few months ago a discussion in the group about the use of Google Glass and other wearable tech in museum and galleries.
I wanted to update you all on what Imperial War Museums has been doing around this.
We found the discussion intriguing and decided to explore the possibilities of wearable tech, particularly Glass a little more.
We teamed up with a company based in France, Guidigo - an approved app provider for Google Glass https://www.guidigo.com/ - to make a tour of our First World War Galleries at IWM London with Google Glass.
We wanted to use the knowledge of our curators, who worked on the galleries, as well as archive material - photos and film - to give an exclusive tour for Glass users revealing a hidden story behind some of the objects in the galleries.
The Guidigo platform is really easy to use and working with the curators we were able to source great assets and record audio from our curators themselves, telling the visitor about the objects. We could then easily uploaded into the platform and onto Glass. The great thing about the Guidigo app is it's also available on mobiles and tablets so although this experiment is focused on Glass we have produced a product that's also available to visitors without it.
This is still very much an experiment though and by working on the project we've found things that work well and things that don't. We've also worked closely with Guidigo as they update their product to find new ways of doing things and with the Google Glass team to find out more about the device and what it can offer museums.
Why am I telling you all this? Because we want to invite you to come and try out what we've done so far at a special tour of the First World War Galleries on December 8.
We have 10 places available for the event which will run from 8 - 9.30am and will be a preview of our first experiment with Google Glass and a chance to explore the First World War Galleries before they're open to the public.
We're still learning and adapting the tour so we'll be really keen to hear from you and find out if you enjoyed the tour, if Glass has added to your experience and if you think the tour is a good use of Glass or what else you think we could do to make the most of this new technology. Members of IWM staff and the Google Glass team will be on hand throughout the tour to help you if you get stuck and to suggest different ways you can use Glass to get an idea of its potential.
This will be a great chance to see our very popular Galleries in a new way and we'll supply plenty of tea, coffee and pastries to help you cope with the early hour!
If you're interested please drop me an email back to let me know you can attend. We are limited to ten places so it's first come first served!
Thanks for listening and hope to see you there.
