Thank you to Alex Flynn for the link to this very interesting piece. As it makes clear, the context for the casualisation of the academic workforce is large and complex. Ultimately it involves major issues such as the shift from an elite to a mass higher education model and the cost issues that go with that. Without tackling those complex issues, the problems are not going to be solved.
What I would be interested in knowing more immediately is what national unions or associations exist for PhD students, if any. It seems to me that one way of trying to improve the position for PhD students and those who have recently finished a PhD is to have strong unions/associations that can fight for them and also provide information etc for students considering a PhD etc (so that they are better able to make decisions).

Dear All,
I would also like to put forward my support here, in solidarity with many friends and colleagues who have already done so. These issues too easily slip from the ill-considered immediacies of the day-to-day to the paradigm that becomes the norm. If a letter is indeed being put together please do add me to the list.
I’m sure many colleagues have seen this blog from the LSE, which throws light on some of the underlying logic at play:

All the best,
