This is the best resource I know about for choosing a qual software package. I agree - keep it as simple as you can.

Subject: advice on using free software
Dear List Members
I am starting a historical project with a colleague working on a separate site. She has no prior experience of CAQDAS and is using a PC. I have some experience and use a Mac desktop running Windows. I want to choose software to help us analyse material mainly from letters and a few legal reports. I think simplicity is the best way forward. I am currently looking at QDA Miner Lite and Notepad ++. Could list members advise on software they have tried on seen in action.
best wishes
