Dear all,
The Business Archives Council of Scotland is holding its third Meet the Archivists day on Friday 31st October at the Scottish Oral History Centre, University of Strathclyde.
The aim of the Meet the Archivists event is to bring together academics and archivists to discuss and explore with students how business archive collections can be used for their research. This year we are focusing on the use of business archives for genealogical research, including oral history records. So the event will be aimed at genealogical history students, oral history students and academics from these disciplines; however all are welcome.
Speakers include:
Lifelong learning tutor, universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, Dr Ronnie Scott will speak about his PhD research into the origins of the Glasgow Necropolis, which involved the use of business archives "Digging up the past: Unearthing the archives of the Glasgow Necropolis"
Professor of Sociology, Tim Strangleman from Kent University, speaking about the research project he carried out on behalf of Guinness, to record the closure and working lives of employees at the London brewery "Researching Work and Working Lives in a Corporate Archive: Reflections on Using the Diageo Archive"
Caroline Brown from Archive Services at the University of Dundee will discuss how the University's extensive business collections, in particular their jute industry records, can be used in genealogical research.
"Unravelling the Threads: Using Business Records for Family History, a Jute Industry case study"
There will also be a general overview of the research potential of business archives in genealogical research, as well as a practical workshop on how to locate and access business archive collections.
