CFP: Geographies of Care Beyond the Normative Life Course
AAG 2015, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. (April 21-25)
Convenors: Nathaniel Lewis (University of Nottingham) and Eleanor Wilkinson (University of Southampton)
Amidst the growing academic interest in the role of care in health and well-being, geographers have contributed nuanced understandings of how carevaries across urban and rural areas, among different dis/abilities, and between caregivers and the 'cared for'. Less attention, however, has focused on experiences of care and/or caregiving among individuals with non-normative sexual and gender identities or those following non-normative life courses. The state increasingly responsibilizes care to the 'family unit,' leaving behind those who are not supported by a network of biological kin. Processes of both formal and informal care and caregiving among LGBTQI populations hence remain under-theorized, as do the caring practices and experiences of those who are single and those who do not have children. This CFP therefore welcomes empirical and/or theoretical papers on any theme which deepens our understanding of care beyond the normative life course. Possible topics include, but are in no way limited, to the following:
* 'Families of choice' as care providers
* Alternative geographies of friendship and care
* Activist groups / charities and their role in care provision
* Urban and rural communities as informal sources of care for LGBTQI populations
* Social isolation, abandonment
* Implications of social policy and law for individuals with non-heteronormative life trajectories
* Later-in-life and end-of-life care
* Care, wellbeing and housing
* Implications of life transitions and events for care
* The heteronormativity of care
* Intersections of gender, race, and sexuality in experiences and practices of care
Please submit an abstract of 200 words to both Nathaniel Lewis ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and Eleanor Wilkinson ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by October 21, 2014 for consideration. Participants will be notified and asked to register by October 29, 2014.
