Hi Anthony,
We wont be able to recouple all of the cost, just a nominal fee for hard dis drives. We are just working through the costs that we need to charge the researchers if they require >5Tb on Tier1 and > 1Tb on tier2. Once we get publish I'll sent it to the list.
We will run the service with a loss, however we are creating a admin layer that includes finance and academics so that we can use them to get more funding, esepcially when the hardware is reaching it 5 year. We are currently nearing end of year 3, so we are now starting to looking to upgrade the hardware.
We have to be seen to promote the archive / storage, so the monies will come out of our IT Services budget rather than the University pot, until we prove to the University that this needs recurrent funding, similar to how other infrastructure is funded.

Hi Aslam, the major part of our costs are backups and mirroring. Then there's the hardware that needs to be replaced every 4-5 years. Do you have an estimate for that (per TB) and are you saying that you will pass on costs above the 5TB allocation at e.g. £50 per TB (even though it may cost the institution e.g. £1000 per TB)? Are you confident that this is sustainable over 10 to 20 years (and once again) have you been able to estimate the trues costs over this period? I'm curious because many institutions including Aberystwyth, would not be able to allocate these resources unless we can recoup this from research grants.

Antony
