Well statues and memorials can be listed buildings, so you have to have them as buildings if you want to store Buildings at Risk data or something.
Something that confuses me is whether to call a farmstead a monument or a building. I'm starting to think the division isn't actually that helpful!
And then when a building's demolished I demote it to a monument.
Bit silly really. ;-)

Alex,
I would say that they are most definitely buildings, as they were designed to provide shelter for protracted periods of time. Although they are obviously not the same thing as the top level classification, the two Thesaurus entries for "Building" give an idea of what should be classed in such a way:
Monument Type "Building (Unassigned)" - A structure with a roof to provide shelter from the weather for occupants or contents. Use specific type where known.
Evidence "Building" - Monument with a roof and walls or evidence of these.
Looking at this I should probably re-assign top level classifications to the memorials and statues in my area as I currently have them as "Building"!

Are not all "Historic Buildings" Monuments anyway? Historic buildings are only buildings that are 'historic' and buildings are only a type of structure (which is what a monument should perhaps be called).
And did you mean to end your second question so abruptly? I can certainly wonder if any decisions (of merit) were taken during the DoB project but it doesn't quite fit with your first question.
I'll leave my Friday question until tomorrow so as not to overload Thursday.

Subject: Pillboxes
Hi all,
Bit of an odd/Friday afternoon question - at Hampshire pillboxes have a top level classification of monument. The question occurred to me today whether they should be classified as a monument or whether they should be a historic building if they are upstanding.
A building is defined as 'Something that is built, as for human habitation; a structure.' Technically I suppose this could include a pillbox....
Also if they are widely classified as a monument, why for example was there a decision taken during the Defence of Britain survey.
Thanks
