EVA KNOPF: MAJUBS REISE / MAJUB’S JOURNEY
Tuesday, 14 October 2014, 7pm
Born in 1904 in Dar es Salaam, then German East Africa, and having fought in the German colonial army in the First World War, Majub bin Adam Mohamed travelled to Berlin in 1929 to claim his soldier’s pay. He stayed on to eventually become a frequent black extra in national socialist films where he appeared alongside stars like Zarah Leander, Hans Albers and Heinz Rühmann. Eva Knopf’s meticulously researched film essay combines facts and digitally manipulated excerpts from these films to trace the life of this unusual man and to deconstruct the stereotypes he was reduced to.
Germany 2013, colour & b/w, 48 mins. With English subtitles. Directed by Eva Knopf.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Eva Knopf.
