In our initial negotiations we used the argument that by giving access to AJBL we were cultivating their clients of the future, and indeed it is a strong argument, however, what they were really interested in was that our group represents the majority of architecture Schools in the UK, and the possibility of all, or the majority, to subscribe to their product.
Their post-negotiations offer had time and numbers constrictions, they wanted us to sign shortly after their presentation at our conference, and they wanted a minimum of 75% of ARCLIB academic member institutions to sign in order to offer us a group deal, which at the time was a flat £1000 + VAT with IP access, to raise only to keep up with inflation/cost of living every year.
This was quite a drop from the initial institutional offer of £3000 + VAT per year.
Because the deadline was too near for most institutions to sign up, we managed to have a few months delay, but I'm afraid, even so, very few institutions were interested, and only 2 or 3 signed up at the group negotiated price. We indicated that deadlines don't work, and they still offered the negotiated deal to the 2 or 3 institutions who subscribed, even if it was passed the deadline. Our strength in numbers for the negotiation proved inconclusive.
In general, it has proven difficult to get a response form AJ, and different people had different experiences, also, it has proven difficult for member institutions to share details of their negotiations with AJ with other members, and there might have been at least one institution that subscribed at whatever price was asked.
All in all, to negotiate a group deal we would need consensus 1) that we will not undertake a subscription other than at the price and conditions we agree, 2) the majority of member academic institutions, and 75% is a good indication, undertake to subscribe within a time frame.
Without these, we do not have much negotiating power, especially if they look at the numbers who subscribed at the original post conference special group offer.
Saying this, it might still be possible to persuade them to agree with us an open deal for any member institution, not on the strength of the number of our academic institutional members, but just on the strength that any subscribing institution will forge their future customers.

Might there be a further opportunity for negotiation of a group discount? It seems most unfair to go back on an agreement - not that we had taken this up. AJBL has developed into a really important resource but one students may want to continue to use beyond uni - so it's in EMAPs interest to encourage their use whilst students.
