The BRA's annual conference 2014 - arranged this year in conjunction with the Historic Houses Archivists Group - will take place on 2 December. Through the generosity of the Duke of Northumberland, our venue is the magnificent Syon House in Syon Park, west London. There will be an opportunity to explore the house and (weather permitting) gardens. Registration begins at 9.45am and proceedings get under way at 10.15am. The conference will cover a fascinating range of aspects of life in British historic houses. The speakers are the following:
Christopher Hunwick, Archivist to the Duke of Northumberland: 'Let each man do his best': The Percy Family and their staff in the First World War, 1914-1918
Pamela Sambrook, Consultant to the National Trust and English Heritage: 'A More Steady and Moral Set of Servants I never Saw': the Sutherland Collection as a research source for the domestic household of Trentham, Staffordshire, 1830-50
Peter Brears, former director of York and Leeds city museums and museum and country house consultant: Between Upstairs and Downstairs: Archives and the architecture of later medieval-early Tudor domestic administrators
Christine Hiskey, Archivist at Holkham Hall: Palladian and Practical: Country House Technology at Holkham Hall
Katherine Holden, Research Fellow in History, University of the West of England: One of the family? The nanny in town and country houses in 20th Century Britain
Pat Morris, former senior lecturer in Zoology at Royal Holloway, University of London, and member of the National Trust Council: Taxidermy and the Country House
The Bond lecturer this year is Jeremy Musson, the distinguished author, editor and presenter. He will be reflecting on what can be learned from comparing life in Cambridge colleges and British stately homes.
