Dear Film-Philosophy list members,
I’d like to draw your attention to a new publication DECADES NEVER START ON TIME: A RICHARD ROUD ANTHOLOGY, which has just been published by BFI Publishing/Palgrave Macmillan.
The book is edited and introduced by myself, in collaboration with Roud’s niece, Karen Smolens, and the preface is written by David Thomson.
The anthology brings together published and unpublished material written by Roud from the 1950s to the late 1980s, including a selection of articles from The Guardian and Sight & Sound, extracts from his major books, and previously unseen material from his private archive, notably his biography of François Truffaut and his memoir about film culture of the 1960s “Decades Never Start on Time”.
The collection shows that Roud was not only one of the great film critics of his time – he was also a key player in the dynamic interaction of film festivals and “new cinemas” that took place in those pivotal years of post-war world cinema.
Given Roud’s important presence in the history of the BFI and the London Film Festival, his founding role at the New York Film festival, and his personal attachment to Paris and French film culture, I am hopeful that there will be strong interest in the book from a wide range of film lovers around the world.
Best wishes, Michael Temple
