A fully-funded studentship in biostatistics has become available within the statistics group of Mathematical Sciences (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/maths/ ) at the University of Southampton. The group is also part of the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute of the University of Southampton (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/s3ri). The studentship will cover all UK/EU fees (hence is suitable to UK and EU applicants) and pay a stipend on research council level for 3 years.
The project addresses the question of appropriate methodology for rare event data analysis. Systematic reviews and meta-analysis provide huge amount of data not only for the efficacy of a treatment but also on potential adverse events. Although the size of the available data might be large, information on adverse events is frequently sparse, often leading to zero-event studies. The project seeks to investigate a number of techniques including nonparametric effect estimation modelling and generalized linear mixed models that appear appropriate to cope with zero-count data analysis.
For informal inquires and expressions of interests please contact the Chair in Medical Statistics, Professor Dankmar Böhning ([log in to unmask]). See also http://www.personal.soton.ac.uk/dab1f10/home.htm on current ongoing work of the research group. Please do not apply before contacting the person named above.
