The self-controlled case series (SCCS) method is a study design for investigating the association between an exposure and an adverse event. The method was originally developed to study adverse reactions to vaccines. One of the features of the method is that separate controls are not required as the cases act as their own controls. Hence, an advantage of the method is that confounding factors that do not vary with time, such as genetics, location, socio-economic status are controlled for implicitly.
This method was first proposed in 1995 by Paddy Farrington who was also the recipient of the 2013 RSS Bradford Hill medal. This half day meeting has been organised to mark the Bradford Hill award and to acknowledge Paddy’s contribution to the field of infectious disease epidemiology. The featured presentations will focus on the theory, applications, potentials and limitations of the SCCS method.
The meeting will close with a wine reception.
