You are probably already well aware of our Challenger material and anyone wanting further details should contact us off list. We also hold the collection of Joseph Wright (d.1921) who was an authority on foraminifera and hold a couple of thousand well documented cavity slides from his long career, including Challenger material but a lot else based on sea floor dredgings, mostly on the Atlantic continental shelf but some from further afield. We also hold his offprint collection.

Subject: Glasgow Challenger material
Hi, Here in Glasgow Museums we also have some Challenger material – which came in as part of the collection of David Robertson FLS, FGS (1806–1896) - the 'Cumbrae Naturalist' in 1902 and 1914, and also last year, when more Robertson material came to us (*see below). They are mainly slides of Foraminifera and Ostracoda.
In relation to other deep-water material, we have a very good collection of deep water fish and some invertebrates collected in the 1970s by the research vessels RS Challenger and Walter Herwig from off the west coast of Scotland, notably around the Rockall Trough. These include Scottish corals from 3,000m, pygnogonids and holothurians amongst other things…
We also have a specimen of a bivalve, Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis, described in 1994, collected from beside a deep-water hydrothermal vent.
*The recent Robertson material is of Recent and sub-fossil invertebrates etc., part of Robertson’s collection, which was housed in the Universities Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM), Isle of Cumbrae. The collection comprises principally Molluscs, Foraminifera, Ostracods etc. Many are preserved as microscope slides. There are some Type, figured and cited specimens in the collection. There are also microscope slides of Hydroids from Clifford Edwards. There are estimated to be well over 5,000 lots in total. The Collection was gifted to Glasgow Museums at the time of the transfer of the UMBSM from the University of London to the Field Studies Council. Some other material from UMBSM went to the Hunterian Museum (Glasgow).

Subject: Manchester Challenger material
Hello- just to spread the word that we have a lot of Challenger material here in Manchester- some molluscs (about 100), and hundreds if not thousands of specimens of bryozoa and forams (including many ‘type slides’ and actual type specimens), as well as sediment samples, some echinoderms and crustacean, and a couple of birds and fish. This is partly because Frederick Pearcey, who was actually on the Challenger, worked here after the voyage. We also have AW Waters’ collection of bryozoan and he described some of the bryozoa from the expedition- we also have his Challenger Medal. Some of this material is on exhibition in a nice display with an illustration of the ship in the background.
If anyone is interested in any of this, just let me know.
Very best wishes,
Henry

Subject: Re: Deep-sea Collections
Hey there,
Interesting to hear that. At RAMM ( Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery), we have just received funding to re-unite HMS Challenger material in the form of an online database (see this link for further information -http://www.rammuseum.org.uk/news/ramm-delves-into-deep-sea-data). As you have said, the material at bigger museums is fairly well-known but that held at smaller museums tends not to be known about by many. We are going to be in contact with many museums around the UK and possibly those overseas as well to try and collate all the data from this expedition. The aim is to have the data online in an exportable format so those interested can export the data they want to work with. Similarly, we are hoping to develop the database to enable holders of Challenger collections to import their own data.
Coincidently, UCL are advertising a PHD studentship involving similar work (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/prospective/phd/Making_The_Oceans_Visible_Studentship). We are hoping to work with the student to increase the opportunity to make this database as complete as possible.
I will be working on this project for a year. We hope to have most of the work done by then. If you do manage to receive funding then we would be very interested to hear from you as this is something we could help each other out with.
If any other museums reading this hold Challenger material that we haven’t spoken to already, we would love to hear from you.
