Hello,
My name is Lauren Prial, and I am a paralegal at Cooley LLP in New York. I am currently assisting two attorneys in our Washington, DC office to provide pro bono representation in the asylum case of a mentally ill Ethiopian man. Dr. Gordon Shen at UC Berkeley suggested that I reach out to this listserv in the hopes of finding someone with a background in mental health who might be interested in helping our client seek asylum here in the United States.
By way of background, our client is a long-time green card holder who first came to the US as a teenage refugee after fleeing domestic abuse in Ethiopia. As a young man he developed schizophrenia and has been convicted of larceny, for which the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is now trying to deport him. Critical to our client's asylum claim is finding a mental health expert to conduct an evaluation and a country conditions expert who can testify to the poor treatment and lack of resources for the mentally ill in Ethiopia. At this point, it looks as if we may have found a country conditions expert, but we are still missing someone who can conduct a psychological evaluation of our client's condition. Our client's hearing will be in Washington, DC, so ideally we would like to find someone in that area or someone who has contacts in that area. We would gladly accept any and all referrals.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
Best,
Lauren
