Workshop invitation: Temporary Agency Work in the EU political
economies of austerity: a race to the bottom?
<http://www.bath.ac.uk/ipr/events/news-0107.html>
*Date*: Friday 19 September, 2014
*Time*: 11.30 -- 17.00
*Venue*: 3 East 2.1, University of Bath, Claverton Down, Bath. BA2 7AY
*Abstract*: Is the expansion of temporary agency work and casual
employment a 'race to the bottom' or a flexible springboard for
economic growth? What kind of work and working conditions are
experienced by people in temporary agency work? How do people actually
find work -- and keep it -- in an environment of low economic growth,
irregular migration and welfare cuts? These are critical questions for
policy, politics and polity in the European Union.
In pursuit of informed answers to the above questions, this workshop
discusses new empirical research evidence from an EU-funded project,
on how regimes of temporary and casual employment operate over time,
for people and businesses in different countries and economic sectors
in the EU.
The workshop brings together policymakers, researchers and
practitioners, to better understand the relationship of casual
employment, political economy, and welfare in different EU countries,
with a special focus on the UK.
*Speakers include*: Bridget Anderson (COMPAS, University of Oxford),
Martin Couchman (Deputy Chief Executive, British Hospitality
Association), David Camp (Director, Association of Labour Providers),
Jan Cremers (Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies), Anke
Hassel (Hertie School of Governance), Bridget Henderson (Unite the
Union), Isabella Biletta (Eurofound) and Paul Whitehouse (Former Head
of UK's Gangmaster Licensing Authority)
