Location:

London

Salary:

Up to £13,863

Hours:

Full Time

Contract:

Contract / Temporary

Closes:

8th Oct 2014

Avery Hill Campus

Description: Antiretroviral therapy has improved survival for people living with HIV (PWHIV) with many expecting a normal life expectancy. This means that the population of PWHIV in the UK is ageing with some estimating that in ten years, 60% of the UK population of PWHIV will be over 50 years old. Older PWHIV have complex health and social care needs with higher rates of health conditions associated with ageing, significant levels of economic deprivation and social isolation.

Using mainly qualitative approaches such as interviews, groups and documentary analysis, the research will examine the experience of ageing with HIV in London paying particular attention to emerging and ongoing needs within the context of current models of clinical and social care provision. The research will take an assets-based approach examining not only how needs are experienced but also how individuals and communities craft innovative ways of meeting needs. Working at the interface between 'self-help' and the role of the State as service provider and drawing on current and emerging theory around citizenship, participation and activism within neo-liberal contexts, the research will problematize traditions of communitarianism emblematic of HIV responses.
Candidates for this studentship must have attained a minimum 2:1 (upper second) classification in their undergraduate degree, or hold a masters' degree, preferably in a health-related social sciences/humanities discipline. They should ideally have experience of qualitative research methodologies and be able to work with quantitative data. They should have strong written and oral communication skills. Some experience of the HIV voluntary sector is also desirable.
