*MIRRORS OF GLOBAL CRISIS*
The recent global crises have underlined the fragility of the political
realm in the face of economic upheavals. If for European and North American
countries crisis phenomena are nearly forgotten, countries from the Global
South have a profound recent experience with them. The global relevance of
the word “crisis” is due to the important social and political networks
built within the nation-state system. Moreover, crisis, in the past three
years, has been a term often used to underline the rising power of these
networks among nation states. Although this configuration appears new to
the global arena, it is only one among the multiple configurations between
society and economy that take place in history.
The panel will present some of these processes focusing on the effects of
capitalist penetration in different spheres of social life in the Global
South. We welcome studies of small communities or urban neighborhoods, but
also papers interested in larger scale dynamics, such as those that
consider the globalization process as a dynamic that penetrates old and new
forms. An emphasis on the influence of the global economy on social life
should not obscure the importance of local social dynamics and histories.
Best regards.
Alex
