While GT is quite possibly the gold standard for machine translation (it's definitely one of the best) it gets pretty pricey if you need to do large scale translation.
Working on the FuzzyPhoto project (http://fuzzyphoto.edublogs.org/) we need to translate anything up to 104 million characters which means a bill of £1200 every time we use GT.
We're using the free apertium instead (http://www.apertium.org/) which can be installed on a local machine. There are some downsides, it's not got the same range of languages as GT but that's not a problem for us and the translations are not as good as GT but the algorithms we're using aren't bothered by grammatically iffy translations so again, not a problem.
I mention this in case anyone else needs to do translation work as it took a fair bit of time and research to find a translation solution that worked and didn't cost so much.
