Subject: carbon allowances media coverage
Dear all
Does anyone know of academic papers that examine media coverage/ representations of proposals for personal carbon allowances? Studies focussing on the UK media would be ideal, but other countries would also be useful. My various online searches don't seem to be finding anything...
Thanks a lot
Neil

Subject: PhD Studentship on Planning and Affordable Housing at Oxford Brookes University
The Department of Planning at Oxford Brookes University is currently advertising a PhD studentship around the topic of Affordable Housing and Planning. Please pass on the details below to anyone who might be interested. The usual apologies for cross posting apply.
Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment
Oxford Brookes University - PhD Studentship
The School of Planning at Oxford Brookes University is pleased to offer a three year full-time PhD Studentship to a new student commencing in October 2014. The studentship offers a tax free stipend of £12,500 per annum for a period of three years plus tuition fees at the full time UK/EU rate. £500 is available over the three years to fund fieldwork and conference attendance. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Sue Brownill with Dr Dave Valler as second supervisor. A January 2015 start date can be arranged for the right candidate.
This fully-funded studentship seeks to examine how planning can better contribute to the provision of affordable housing. There is general agreement that we are currently in the middle of a crisis of affordability in housing in the UK in general and England in particular. However, there is little agreement over the main causes of this or how to tackle it. Planning is one such area of debate with some seeing it as the cause of the current crisis through the restrictions it places on development while others see it as a potential solution through opportunities to provide a strategic policy framework and secure community gain. This studentship aims to explore these debates by addressing the following questions. How is the relationship between planning and housing affordability conceptualised? What are the policy debates? What are the dimensions of the housing affordability crisis in particular places and how can planning proactively intervene to address this? Oxfordshire will be a major case study focus therefore it is expected that the student will be based in Oxford or spend considerable time here. The work will involve engagement with the literature and critically reviewing existing planning policy and practice as well as undertaking quantitative and qualitative research into the impact of the lack of affordable housing in particular places.
A fuller description of this project and further information on research in the Department of Planning, can be found at http://planning.brookes.ac.uk/research/index.html. If you would like to apply you should request an application pack from Dr Sue Brownill [log in to unmask] or Dr Dave Valler [log in to unmask] quoting ‘studentship in planning and affordable housing’ in the subject line.
Fully completed applications must be sent to [log in to unmask] - by 5pm on Monday 11th August 2014.
As part of the application you must submit a maximum 3 page outline research proposal (instructions on how to prepare a research proposal will be in the pack) together with a supporting statement of no more than 300 words summarising:
• Your reasons for undertaking this project;
• Preparation undertaken and previous research experience;
• How this bursary will make a difference to your research.
Please be advised that the selection process may involve an interview on Tuesday 2nd September 2014, and the successful candidate would be expected to commence in the research degree programme by Oct 1st October 2014.
