Subject: RE: Tiffs v Jpegs
Hi Rebecca,
I think it would be prudent to consider camera capture for trans and negs as scanner manufactures are reducing support for their products. Fuji is considering, or has stopped support for their Lanovia scanners. With all these sorts of considerations it's probably best to start at the top and work down so I would be looking at Mamiya Leaf backs. Light boxes need to have a constant light source and be of a known colour temperature. The only issue I'm aware of with this process is reflections from the glass surface of the negative. Using cameras is certainly more time efficient but potentially more expensive than scanners.
Hope that helps,
Matt

Subject: Re: Tiffs v Jpegs
Hello,
As far as file format is concerned, we store everything as .tif (uncompressed), the scanner produces tifs, and we convert all the files captured on the Nikon camera from raw. This is for preservation purposes, the minimum file size being 50mb. We do however store a separate low resolution jpeg archive for use on web, powerpoint, reference etc. That may change as we implement a new Image Management System which will create jpgs on the fly from our Tif archive.
While we are on the subject I wondered if I could digress slightly and ask what equipment people use to digitise glass plates and large / medium format transparencies. Typically we scan these on a flat bed scanner, but have recently been discussing a camera set up with a light box. Has anyone come across any problems concerning the latter and would you say that it is more time efficient using camera instead of scanner?
Many thanks, I look forward to your replies.
