National Vital Statistics System.
Mortality Data

Mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) are a
fundamental source of demographic, geographic, and cause-of-death
information. This is one of the few sources of health-related data that
are comparable for small geographic areas and are available for a long
time period in the United States. The data are also used to present the
characteristics of those dying in the United States, to determine life
expectancy, and to compare mortality trends with other countries.

Standard forms for the collection of the data and model procedures for the
uniform registration of the events are developed and recommended for
nationwide use through cooperative activities of the jurisdictions and
NCHS. Material is available to assist persons in completing the death
certificate. NCHS shares the costs incurred by the States in providing
vital statistics data for national use. For further information, refer to

U.S. Vital Statistics System: Major Activities and Developments, 1950-95

This new report by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
provides a detailed description of the history and organization of the
Vital Statistics System in the United States.

One section of the report is a reprint of the original history of the
Vital Statistics System as published by NCHS in 1950. The reprint begins
with a discussion on early collections and preservation of registration
records, describes the era in which data records became recognized as
essential for control of epidemics, and continues with discussions of the
national campaign to bring about uniform registration laws and standard
reporting forms for vital events (births, deaths, marriages, and divorces)
occurring in the United States.

Additional discussion available by clicking the More Information Icon.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/other/miscpub/vsushist.htm

The remaining sections of the current report focus on further developments
to the system, including organizational changes, supporting activities,
developmental activities, and data improvement. Other significant
activities and accomplishments relevant to the U.S. Vital Statistics
System are also addressed.

Improving Population Health Policy. Practice. Research.

Population health is defined as the health outcomes of a group of
individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group.
(3,4) These groups are often geographic populations such as nations or
communities, but can also be other groups such as employees, ethnic
groups, disabled persons, prisoners, or any other defined group. The
health outcomes of such groups are of relevance to policy makers in both
the public and private sectors.

Note that population health is not just the overall health of a population
but also includes the distribution of health. Overall health could be
quite high if the majority of the population is relatively healthy-even
though a minority of the population is much less healthy. Ideally such
differences would be eliminated or at least substantially reduced.

Population health - Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_health

Population health has been defined as "the health outcomes of a group of
individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the
group".[1] It is an approach to health that aims to improve the health of
an entire human population. This concept does not refer to animal or plant
populations. A priority considered important in achieving this aim is to
reduce health inequities or disparities among different population groups
due to, among other factors, the social determinants of health, SDOH. The
SDOH include all the factors: social, environmental, cultural and physical
the different populations are born into, grow up and function with
throughout their lifetimes which potentially have a measurable impact on
the health of human populations.[2] The Population Health concept
represents a change in the focus from the individual-level, characteristic
of most mainstream medicine. It also seeks to complement the classic
efforts of public health agencies by addressing a broader range of factors
shown to impact the health of different populations. The World Health
Organization's Commission on Social Determinants of Health, reported in
2008, that the SDOH factors were responsible for the bulk of diseases and
injuries and these were the major causes of health inequities in all
countries.[3] In the US, SDOH were estimated to account for 70% of
avoidable mortality.[4]

From a population health perspective, health has been defined not simply
as a state free from disease but as "the capacity of people to adapt to,
respond to, or control life's challenges and changes".[5] The World Health
Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in 1946 as "a state
of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity."[6][7]

Healthy People 2020

http://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/default.aspx

Healthy People 2020 is a web site sponsored by the US Department of Health
and Human Services, representing the cumulative effort of 34 years of
interest by the Surgeon General's office and others. It identifies 42
topics considered Social determinants of health and approximately 1200
specific goals considered to improve population health. It provides links
to the current research available for selected topics and identifies and
supports the need for community involvement considered essential to
address these problems realistically.[8]

Health Data.gov

This site is dedicated to making high value health data more accessible to
entrepreneurs, researchers, and policy makers in the hopes of better
health outcomes for all. In a recent article, Todd Park, United States
Chief Technology Officer, captured the essence of what the Health Data
Initiative is all about and why our efforts here are so important.

In much the same way, HHS has begun "liberating" health data through the
Health Data Initiative -- making more and more data from HHS' vaults (from
CMS, CDC, FDA and NIH, to name a few sources) easily available and
accessible to the public and to innovators across the country. This
information includes clinical care provider quality information,
nationwide health service provider directories, databases of the latest
medical and scientific knowledge, consumer product data, community health
performance information, government spending data and much more.

In addition to publishing brand-new data, we've also focused on making
existing data much easier for developers to use -- i.e., by making it
machine-readable, downloadable and accessible via application programming
interfaces -- while rigorously protecting privacy and confidentiality.
We've made this growing inventory of publicly available data resources
easily findable and accessible at a central location through the
HealthData.gov website.

HealthCareProblems.org Health Care Statistics

Healthcare is one of the top social and economic problems facing Americans
today. The rising cost of medical care and health insurance is impacting
the livelihood of many Americans in one way or another. The inability to
pay for necessary medical care is no longer a problem affecting only the
uninsured, but is increasingly becoming a problem for those with health
insurance as well.

The Human Mortality Database

The Human Mortality Database (HMD) was created to provide detailed
mortality and population data to researchers, students, journalists,
policy analysts, and others interested in the history of human longevity.
The project began as an outgrowth of earlier projects in the Department of
Demography at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and at the Max
Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany (see
history). It is the work of two teams of researchers in the USA and
Germany (see research teams), with the help of financial backers and
scientific collaborators from around the world.

We seek to provide open, international access to these data. At present
the database contains detailed population and mortality data for the
following 37 countries or areas

Heart and Stroke Association Statistics

Each year, the American Heart Association, in conjunction with the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health and
other government agencies, compiles up-to-date statistics on heart
disease, stroke and other vascular diseases in the Heart Disease and
Stroke Statistical Update. This is a valuable resource for researchers,
clinicians, healthcare policy makers, media professionals, the public and
others who seek the best national data available on disease morbidity,
mortality and risks; quality of care; medical procedures and operations;
and costs associated with the management of these diseases. The 2014
Statistical Update is a major source for monitoring cardiovascular health
and disease in the population, with a focus on progress toward the
American Heart Association's 2020 Impact Goals.
