We seek one or two bright, creative misfits to join our fledgling new
design program, the Design Lab at the University of California, San Diego.
Who are we looking for? Young, creative people who work in any area related
to design with a human focus (as opposed to technology or gadget). We want
young people, ideally just finished with their coursework, but they can be
either researchers (in which case a PhD in some discipline is appropriate)
or practitioners, in which case a terminal BA or MA is appropriate, ideally
with some practitioner experience.
We are not just seeking good people. We need people who will move us and
the field of design in exciting, unexpected ways. Often, these people are
characterized as misfits: considered brilliant by their peers and mentors,
but doing work that nobody knows how to classify.
We start immediately, hoping to hire one or two people now to join
us during the 2014-15 academic year (which starts October 2 at UC San
Diego). We intend to repeat this program each year.
The term of service will vary, but ranges from five months through a
year, with reappointment possible up to a maximum of three years.
If you feel you fit, please apply. If you know people who fit, tell us
about them and urge them to them to apply.
*Design Lab Fellows FAQ*
*What will I do as a Design Lab Fellow?* You mission is to help develop a
new foundation for design and demonstrate its practical application. We
expect you to be disruptive, challenging the status quo and the
presuppositions of other lab members and of the field. The specifics of
what you do will be dictated by your interests and ability to excite
others. In addition, we expect you to participate in developing a
curriculum for active learning so others can acquire the appropriate
knowledge and skills.
*How do I apply?* Send your résumé, an essay, and the email addresses of
three references to [log in to unmask] The essay should tell us
what excites you, what impact you aspire to, and what you hope to
accomplish while a Design Fellow. (We know that ideas don’t often work and
new opportunities often arise, so we won’t hold you to your initial
proposal). Make it short: two or three pages, no more.
*When can I apply? * This first year we are only selecting one or two
people. We will review applications as they come in. This means, the
earlier the submission, the better.
*Who should I contact for additional information?* Email
