Dear Amanda,
Please let me be clear about my response to Martin. While this response appeared in the current thread I was not discussing either the topic of “design thinking” or the topic of “design thinking research.”
My response applied directly and only to Martin’s comments on devoting so many words to clarity.
In this reply, I described aspects of research, the research narrative, and the research metanarrative. As I see it, these issues apply to all forms of research.
Martin’s comment suggested that practice-led research succeeds by presenting outcomes without words. My proposal was that this demonstrates only part of the outcome — and I stated that one requires words to present research outcomes in full.
Research involves 1) explaining our research problem, 2) describing our process, and 3) explaining our results so that others can 1) further develop the research problem, 2) further develop the research method, or 3) further develop the research outcome.
To explain in any form of research, the researcher must:
1. State the research problem,
2. Discuss the knowledge in the field to date,
3. Discuss past attempts to examine or solve the problem,
4. Discuss methods and approach,
5. Compare possible alternative methods,
6. Discuss problems encountered in the research, and
7. Explain how the researcher addresses those problems.
This was a general comment on research and comparative research methodology, not a comment on the topic of “design thinking” or the topic of “design thinking research.”
Yours,
Ken
