Hi Heather
At National Museum Cardiff we have several iPads in our art galleries. One
weakness of iOS software is you canŒt boot-up into a single application,
therefore we have built into our HTML application a refresh that darkens
the screen after the galleries close simply using a wholescreen black
div. We find that screen brightness uses most power therefore by serving a
black screen, the units can run on battery for many hours hours, come 9am,
then another refresh brings the display to life again.
We can alter this through our back end cms, so if, for instance there is a
lauch event, where the screen need to be on until 10pm, then we simply go
in and change to <cms:kiosk:screen_blanker bootup="9" shutdown=³22" />
We develop our own in-house CMS that run our gallery interactives, more
can be read here:

>Subject: Powering iPads in exhibition
>
>
>We Could do with some advise about powering iPads,
>
>We have 5 iPads with an Augmented Reality app in an exhibition.
>We are aware that the app is demanding on power.
>The devices always have a power lead in and we have found that they need
>to be charged overnight, so we have to leave the main power on in the
>exhibition which is not ideal. The lighting is then also on as it's the
>same power track which is highly complex / costly to separate.
>
>We have taken the following steps for each device...
>Turned the wifi off ( so the device is not using power to constantly
>search for wifi)
>set to go into sleep mode when visitors not in,
>Lowered the brightness on screen.
>
>Our power cables have to be long (over a metre) and we have tried
>different grades and don't think this is the problem.
>
>This is a long term exhibition, and after three months,we want to work
>towards turning the main power off overnight.
>
>Any solutions can't involve site based staff doing anything daily with
>each device.
>
>Any suggestions we could try ?
