Call for Papers: Local and regional journalism after Leveson  - 5 November 2014 at the University of Chester
 
 
Just a reminder that the Policy Network of the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA) and the Department of Media at the University of Chester are organising a one-day conference at the Kingsway Buildings in Chester on 5 November 2014 on the present state and the future of local and regional journalism after Leveson.
 
The local press was praised by Lord Justice Leveson for its contribution to local life and for not succumbing to the ethically questionable practices of the national press. While the Leveson report did not contain any specific recommendations for its improvement, it called for urgent government action to prevent the demise of the regional press. So what happened after Leveson – how have regional and local journalists been affected by the Inquiry and all subsequent developments?  We invite papers exploring these and similar issues related to the present state and the future of local and regional regionalism. Outputs: Selected papers from the conference will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Applied Journalism and Media Studies.
 
Confirmed keynote speakers include:
·         Professor Chris Frost: professor and head of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University and a journalist, editor and journalism educator for more than 40 years working in newspapers before moving into the academy. He is National Chair of the Association for Journalism Education and as well as being a National Executive member of the National Union of Journalists and Chair of the Ethics Council. He is also a National Council member of the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting. He is a former President of the Union and a former member of the UK Press Council. He has written several books on Journalism including Journalism Ethics and Regulation (now in third edition).
·         Alison Hastings: currently BBC Trustee for England and chair of the Editorial Standards Committee. She is also Vice President of the British Board of Film Classification and a non exec at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. She was previously editor of the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle between 1996-2002. During that time Alison was also an Editor Commissioner for the Press Complaints Commission. Subsequently she has worked for the PCC as a consultant and trainer.
·         Dr James Morrison: a senior lecturer in Journalism at Kingston University and a former national newspaper journalist, who worked as a staff writer for, among others, the Independent on Sunday, the Daily Mail and the Press Association. He is the author of a core NCTJ textbook for trainee journalists, Essential Public Affairs for Journalists (Oxford University Press) and the Hale Expert Guide to Journalistic Writing.
 
Please note that we invite proposals from lecturers, researchers, PhD students and industry representatives. There will be a small registration fee of £20, which will cover lunch and refreshments.
