Dear Kirsi,
Chair of the SRN,

& members of the council of the SRN,

This mail I write with all respects to the typical theoretical approach of screenwriting.

I used to be a teacher, but now I am in full practice, not only as a screenwriter but as a producer as well. The practice is in many countries different, depending on the influence of local politics policies, local economics and so on. This is not only so between continents (America and Europe for example,) but also between European countries. Europe is a changing political continent. New local politics may have an influence on the writing of screenwriters (whether they like it or not).
In practice this means: winning a festival is not enough. If I want to succeed as a producer I will have to sell (to you). You are my clients. Only if I make a product that sells, I am a good producer and screenwriter. I am afraid this is reality for many of the practitioners. Are we now competitors instead of colleagues? Or have we always been competitors?

In the mean, many of us, writers and producers, need to keep our intellect clean (we are not prostitutes). We want to produce intelligent film and tv that sell.

Another evolution: Google will start up television station in Europe (accompanied with gaming). The television world is changing fast. What effect will that have that on practitioners (not all of them are writing in English).
For me I look at it as a challenge, a fight to succeed in this jungle. I know, I can loose this fight.

These are ideas I hope the conference in october will pay attention to. Research is necessary in this field.

Hugo

> We hereby call for nominations for election to the SRN Executive. There are three posts available, and each nomination must have a proposer and a seconder, each having been members of the SRN for at least one year. The candidate should include a short statement for circulation to members. These posts are not specific office-holders; it is normal for the Executive themselves to decide on who takes which role, at the first meeting after the AGM.

> Please note that the executive council members may offer themselves for re-election. If there are more than three nominations elections will be organized at the Annual General Meeting to be held during the next screenwriting conference in Potsdam, Germany on October 19, at 1-2 pm.

By September 5th, the nominations are forwarded to members.

Votes must be received by email no later than October 10th, 10:00 Potsdam time. Members attending the AGM in person may cast their vote on the day of the election, by secret ballot. Both sets of votes will be counted together.
